The Sign That Stopped Me

Teaching is a funny thing.

You are surrounded by people all day long, yet it can be an oddly solitary profession. Hundreds of conversations. Countless interactions. And still, much of the work happens quietly behind closed classroom doors.

One unexpected benefit of my current work is that I get to visit 20–30 schools each year. I spend my days talking with school leaders, analyzing data, and facilitating strategic conversations. But I also get to do something very few teachers ever have the opportunity to do:

I get to peek into a lot of classrooms.

And I mean a lot.

So when I see something new—something fresh—I take notice.

Last week, it was a neon sign.

A middle school classroom. The fluorescent lights were off. Natural light poured through the windows. Students were quietly working through a writing exercise. And at the front of the room, glowing softly, was a neon sign that read:

This classroom is better with you in it.

It hit me right in the stomach.

(And I may have suddenly found something in the corner of my eye.)

The sign wasn’t loud. It wasn’t performative. It wasn’t one more piece of classroom décor competing for attention. It was simple. Honest. Reassuring.

The effect was both magnetic and calming.

It reminded me that students don’t need grand gestures to know they matter. Often, they just need small, consistent reminders that they belong.

I hustled home and immediately started searching.

As I started collecting examples, I noticed they seemed to fall into two lovely categories. The first was belonging. The second—perhaps even more classroom-specific—was reading.

I mean, what student wouldn’t be drawn to a reading nook with a glowing sign that gently whispers, Just One More Chapter?

Or a classroom wall that reminds them:

Progress Over Perfection.

Your Future Is Bright.

This Classroom Is Better With You In It.

Thoughtful classroom décor does two things: sets the tone and sends a message. It helps create the kind of room students remember long after they’ve forgotten the lesson objective posted on the whiteboard.

I’ve organized my favorites into two groups: signs that build classroom culture and signs that make reading corners irresistible.

Enjoy the browse—and ask yourself:

What message do your students need to see every day (in lights)?
